CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Liberty recorded six first-place finishes at the Virginia High Performance meet on Sunday, including a pair by Reese Webster (women's 100 and 200).
The Flames' other event champions during the one-day competition at Lannigan Field included Addilae Watts (women's javelin), Ethan Mylin (men's javelin), Troy McKnight (men's 100) and Elijah Sherard (men's 400).
Women's Meet Recap
Battling headwinds all evening, Webster's winning times of 11.60 in the 100 and 23.62 in the 200 were not eye-popping. But she won both sprints in convincing fashion, defeating 2024 CAA runner-up Pebbles Scott of North Carolina A&T by 0.34 seconds in the 100 and taking down 2024 NCAA quarterfinalist Sarah Akpan of Virginia by 0.35 seconds at 200 meters.
In total, the Lady Flames boasted three of the top seven finishers in the 100, also including Mahogany Mobley (sixth place, 12.24) and Elle Bass (seventh, 12.26).
Meanwhile, the 200 continued to be one of Liberty's strongest and deepest events this season. Mobley (fifth, 24.58), Akilah Lewis (sixth, 24.72), Iyana Sherard (seventh, 24.75) and Maddy Merritt (eighth, 24.75) joined Webster inside the top 10 on Sunday.
Rounding out a successful day by the Lady Flames' sprinters, Merritt (personal-best 55.95), Shania Adderley (57.27) and Marianah Scott (personal-best 57.27) finished 4-5-6 in the women's 400.
Watts heaved the javelin a season-best 161-6 on her first attempt. That mark, which fell just two inches shy of her own program record, won the event by more than 22 feet. The junior has now finished first in each of her last three javelin competitions. Meredith Engle followed in fifth place with a season best of her own (120-9).
One of Liberty's most impressive performances of the day came in an event it did not win. Freshman Bethany Tate came in third in the women's shot put with a new personal best of 49-9.25. That mark ranks No. 1 in CUSA this year and puts her in contention for an NCAA Division I East First Rounds berth. Tate also joins Mychelle Cumings, Chelsea Igberaese and Naomi Mojica as the only Lady Flames ever to shot put over 15 meters (Tate's Sunday performance measured 15.17m).
Tate went on to add a team-best fifth-place showing in the women's discus (149-5).
All-American Katie Urbine paced the Lady Flames in the pole vault, finishing seventh at 12-10. But it was teammates Emory Pafford and Sarah Gassman who moved into a ninth-place tie in program history with matching 12-4 clearances.
Men's Meet Recap
Facing headwinds of his own, McKnight clocked 10.65 in the men's 100 to record his first individual event victory in a Liberty uniform. He was joined in the top five by teammates Eddy Vu (fourth, 10.74) and Revell Webster (fifth, 10.76). Webster later led the Flames at 200 meters, crossing the line in 21.50 for fourth place.
Sherard broke 47.00 for the second meet in a row, racing to victory in the men's 400 in 46.88. Sophomore teammate Simon Lamparelli dipped under 48.00 for the first time outdoors, coming in third with a 47.85 clocking.
Mylin (192-4) and Hunter Bleam (personal-best 164-2) finished 1-2 in the men's javelin to start off the meet.
Bleam's performance was one of numerous impressive efforts by the Flames' decathletes in Charlottesville. Notably, Daniel Van Duren recorded personal bests in both the 400 (50.30) and pole vault (14-1.75).
The Flames' other top finishers in field events included Jordae Edwards (second in men's shot put, 53-3.75), Jason Hayes (sixth in men's discus, 152-7) and Todd Benhase (eighth in men's pole vault, 15-7.25).
