LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty's sprinters took center stage on Saturday, the final day of the Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational. They accounted for six of the Flames' nine event victories and three Dr. Jack M. Toms Track facility records, including a stellar 39.42 clocking by the men's 4 x 100 relay quartet of Eddy Vu, Troy McKnight, Revell Webster and Omari Lewis.
Webster went on to win the men's 200, while the Lady Flames swept the women's 100 (Mahogany Mobley), 200 (Maddy Merritt) and 400 (Shania Adderley) titles. Merritt, Reese Webster, Adderley and Mobley then closed out the meet with a facility record in the women's 4 x 400 relay (3:45.58).
Lewis (10.24) clocked a facility record in the men's 100 prelims, while Liberty's first-place finishes by non-sprinters went to Patasha Bryan (women's high jump), Katie Sigerud (women's steeplechase) and Shane Wang (men's triple jump).
In total, Liberty won a dozen events during the two-day meet, also including Friday triumphs by Katie Urbine (women's pole vault), Todd Benhase (men's pole vault) and Nicholas Kiprotich (men's 5K).
Women's Day 2 Recap
Mobley and Merritt continued their fast start to the outdoor season which had begun when both recorded 200 personal bests at last weekend's Bob Davidson Team Challenge.
On Saturday, Mobley (11.81, No. 9 in program history) and Merritt (24.21, tied with Janai Scott for No. 9 in program history) won their respective individual events in personal-best fashion. Mobley then put an exclamation point on the Lady Flames' record-breaking 4 x 400 relay with a 54.36 anchor leg carry.
The Lady Flames' sprint depth was on display all day, as Liberty went 1-2-6 in the 100 final, 1-2-3-4-6-7 in the 200, 1-3-5-6 in the 400 and 1-2 in the 4 x 400 relay.
That was without Reese Webster (No. 2 in program history for the women's 100 and 200) competing in an individual event and with All-American Akilah Lewis only running the 100 prelims (where she led all runners in 11.87) in her Liberty debut.
Amaryah White, a transfer from Coastal Carolina, came in third in the 400 (57.74) and sixth in the 200 (25.22) in her first competition in two years.
Also making an impressive return was Rebecca Allen. Sidelined by injury for the last two months, Allen came back on Saturday to long jump 18-7 for second place.
Bryan enjoyed a busy and successful day. The heptathlete won the women's high jump with a first-attempt clearance at 5-3, placed second in the shot put (39-9.25) and led off for the Lady Flames' second-place 4 x 400 relay quartet (3:51.84).
Competing in the steeplechase for the first time, Sigerud ran an 11:09.95 (No. 10 in program history) to win by more than 12 seconds.
Men's Day 2 Recap
Liberty had displayed incredible potential during its men's 4 x 100 relay season debut at the Bob Davidson Team Challenge before a collision late in the race led to a final time of 40.50.
Fast forward a week, and Vu, McKnight, Webster and Lewis got all three baton passes right while slashing their time to 39.42 and shattering the previous facility record of 40.98. Only six NCAA Division I squads had run faster entering the week, and only the 2022 All-American squad of Brandon Letts, Donald McClinton, Christian Lyon and Diamantae Griffin (39.08) has ever run faster for the Flames. But that memorable team did not record a time this fast before the calendar turned to April.
After throwing down such an impressive performance during the day's opening race, the 4 x 100 relay members went on to excel in their individual events.
Lewis (facilty-record 10.24) and McKnight (season-best 10.35) posted the two fastest times during the men's 100 prelims. Neither one came back for the final, where Vu placed fourth (10.48).
Webster joined the Flames' all-time top 10 for the men's 200 (personal-best 21.07) while leading a 1-2 Liberty finish with freshman Elijah Sherard (personal-best 21.12) close on his heels.
Wang reached 47-9.75 to take the men's triple jump title by 10 inches.
After placing fifth in a loaded men's 1,500 Friday evening, Brendan Pitcher came back to place third in Saturday's 800, crossing the line in 1:50.66.
