How She Got Here: On the bubble for national qualification entering the CUSA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Engle secured her NCAA bid with her third record-setting pentathlon of the season. She won the CUSA title with a Liberty and meet-record score of 4,196. That ranks No. 12 among the 16 pentathletes who qualified to Virginia Beach.
After missing most of the 2024 indoor and outdoor seasons due to injury, Engle showed no signs of rust in her return to competition at the Liberty Kickoff on Dec. 5. She scored 3,989 points to win the competition and break the program record of 3,986 set by Kylie Polsgrove in 2019.
Competing in her home state on Jan. 31, Engle boosted her program record to 4,131 for second place at the Penn State National Open. The only athlete to defeat Engle so far this season (Penn State's Maddie Pitts) will join her in Friday's NCAA pentathlon competition.
That performance set the stage for Engle's CUSA effort, which made her Liberty's first pentathlete ever to qualify for this meet and the first Lady Flame to do so in any event since 2016 (Ednah Kurgat – 5K).
Engle is the first CUSA pentathlete to advance to the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships since 2012 (Houston's Megan Frausto).
Engle has been a strong championship performer throughout her career, winning three conference pentathlon titles (2022 ASUN, 2023 ASUN and 2025 CUSA).
Event Breakdown: Engle is one of nine women who will be competing in their first NCAA pentathlon final on Friday.
She is one of seven conference champions in the field, joining Oklahoma's Pippi Lotta Enok (SEC), Notre Dame's Jadin O'Brien (ACC), Iowa's Pauline Bikembo (Big 10), UTSA's Mia Lien (American), Ball State's Jenelle Rogers (MAC) and San Diego State's Jenna Fee Feyerabend (Mountain West).
Engle is one of only seven Americans in an international field which includes competitors from Germany (Illinois' Lucie Kienast and San Diego State's Jenna Fee Feyerabend), Estonia (Oklahoma's Pippi Lotta Enok), Russia (Texas A&M's Sofia Iakushina), France (Iowa's Pauline Bikembo), Canada (Harvard's Izzy Goudros), Sweden (Oklahoma's Angel Richmore), the United Kingdom (Georgia's Ella Rush) and Norway (UTSA's Mia Lien).
The top two athletes from 2024 are back, including two-time defending champion Jadin O'Brien (Notre Dame) and runner-up Jenelle Rogers (Ball State).
Pippi Lotta Enok (Oklahoma), the 2023 NCAA heptathlon champion, owns the top seed at 4,593.
What's at Stake: As long as Engle completes the pentathlon on Friday, she is guaranteed at least second team All-America honors. If she finishes inside the top eight, she will become a first team All-American.
Engle would become Liberty's first All-American in the pentathlon and the fourth member of the Lady Flames' current roster to become an NCAA Division I All-American (also Paola Bueno, Akilah Lewis and Katie Urbine).
A top eight finish would earn the Lady Flames' first team points at this event since 2002, when current assistant coach Heather (Sagan) Zealand raced to the women's mile national title and Andrea Wildrick tied for fourth place in the women's pole vault.
The highest finish by a CUSA pentathlete at this meet is an eighth-place showing by Charlotte Abrahamsen of Memphis in 2008. Engle broke her CUSA meet record on Feb. 28.
