LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty men's tennis team (3-3) fell 5-2 at home against UNC Charlotte (3-3) in Friday's match. Carl Roothman earned his second straight singles triumph with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 final for his first set of back-to-back singles wins this spring.
The 49ers jumped out to an early match lead clinching the doubles point with victories on courts two and three. The Flames' No. 27 pair of Joaquim Almeida and Siwanat Auytayakul improved to 4-1 in the spring with a 6-4 win on court one.
Charlotte carried the momentum into singles by winning five of the six first sets. The match-clinching fourth point came on court three as the 49ers' Matias Iturbe rallied from 1-4 in the second set to take the match 6-4, 6-4 against Auytayakul.
Roothman found himself down 0-5 out of the gate against Ivan Dreycopp, before rallying to a near comeback, finishing the first set 4-6. The Flame carried the momentum of the late push through to the second set and forced a match-deciding third set on court two. Despite an early 2-1 deficit in the third set, Roothman won five straight games to earn a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 triumph.
Charlotte improves to 4-3 all-time against the Flames, avenging last season's 4-3 loss to Liberty at home.
