
Flames Down Catamounts 79-73 in ESPN Events Invitational Quarterfinals

Liberty stays unbeaten on the year, improving to 5-0. The Flames will move on to face Towson (4-2) in the semifinal round, Tuesday afternoon at noon on ESPN2. Towson topped Rhode Island 62-55 in the first game of the day. Vermont falls to 4-2 after its second straight loss. The Catamounts move to the consolation bracket and will face Rhode Island tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
Brett Decker Jr. paced the Flames with a game-high 23 points. Zach Cleveland delivered another strong all-around performance with 14 points, six rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and two steals. Kaden Metheny finished with 14 points, and Colin Porter added 10 point, five boards, four assists and two steals.

Turning Point
Liberty raced out to a 28-13 lead in the first half of the opening stanza. During that hot start, Brett Decker Jr. knocked down a trio of three-pointers on three straight possessions to make it an 11-6 game. The Flames took their first double-digit lead, 18-8, at the 14:40 mark following a three-point play from Zach Cleveland. Colin Porter's third basket of the game, a layup at the 9:57 mark, pushed the lead to 28-13. Vermont closed the first half on a 7-0 run over the final 3:41 to close within eight, 40-32, at the half.
Liberty led by double digits for much of the second half, but a 7-2 Catamounts run cut the lead to six (67-61) with 5:04 remaining. The Flames knocked down a pair of key triples on the next two possessions, with Porter canning the first (4:46 mark), followed by a JJ Harper three for a 73-61 lead at the 4:18 mark.
