LYNCHBURG, VA. - At the end of October and early November, Liberty's NCAA student-athletes once again participated in Trick or Treat so Others Can Eat. This Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) initiative has helped meet the needs of food-insecure residents of the Lynchburg community and its surrounding area for over 15 years.
This year, Liberty student-athletes collected 8,228 food items during the Trick or Treat so Others Can Eat campaign. The items collected by all 20 Liberty athletics teams were distributed among four local food pantries: Feed the Need at New London Church, Fillin Station at Timberlake Church, Lynchburg Daily Bread and the Liberty Commuter Student Food Pantry. After gathering the donated items, Liberty student-athletes packed and hand-delivered the items to the pantries during the first week of November.
In addition, through the campaign, student-athletes gathered enough items to put together Thanksgiving Day dinners for 15 families at R.S. Payne Elementary School in downtown Lynchburg.
Since the initiative's establishment in 2010, Liberty's NCAA Division I student-athletes have collected over 43,000 canned goods and non-perishable food items for local food pantries in the Lynchburg area.
Liberty University student-athletes give their time and effort to demonstrate love and care by serving the local community throughout each school year. Using the NCAA Athletics platform, Liberty's student-athletes make a difference in the lives of individuals of all ages in both the public and private sectors.
"Love. Care. Serve." is the promise Liberty student-athletes have for each other and the Lynchburg community with the goals of demonstrating love, caring for those in need and serving with a grateful heart.
