LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty's two CUSA weekly award winners (Men's Field Athlete of the Week Joshua Smith and Men's Freshman of the Week Jack Holub) have a couple things in common. Both Flames won events at the Brant Tolsma Invitational while competing in a Liberty uniform for the first time this season.
A junior from South Fulton, Ga., Smith won the men's triple jump title in dramatic fashion on Saturday. His season-best 49-2.5 leap in round six was a centimeter longer than that of runner-up Isaiah-Taji Kargbo-Owens of VCU. The previous evening, Smith had long jumped an indoor personal-best 22-11.75 for eighth place in that event.
At this juncture of the season, the two-time triple jump conference champion ranks No. 4 in CUSA in the triple jump and No. 6 in the long jump.
Holub, who hails from Parkersburg, Pa., raced to victory in the men's mile in his first race in a Liberty uniform. Holub's time, a personal-best 4:15.64, ranks No. 9 in CUSA this year including second to teammate Dale Hall among freshmen.
Smith will be part of a group of Liberty sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers competing in the Bob Pollock Invitational, Friday and Saturday in Clemson, S.C.
Meanwhile, Holub will get to race in his home state this week. He and other Liberty athletes (distance runners, throwers, pole vaulters and multi-event athletes) will head to University Park, Pa., for the Penn State National Open, Friday and Saturday.
