LYNCHBURG, Va. – Host Liberty closed out the fifth annual Brant Tolsma Invitational with four event victories on Saturday, bringing its total to six first-place finishes over the course of the three-day meet. Saturday's winners at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex included Indea Cartwright (women's 60 hurdles), Kate Goodyear (women's 800), Jack Holub (men's mile) and Joshua Smith (men's triple jump).
Women's Day 3 Recap
Cartwright repeated her women's 60 hurdles title from the 2024 Brant Tolsma Invitational, winning by a wide margin (season-best 8.39 to the 8.71 posted by runner-up Lindsay Cooper of High Point.)
Likewise, Goodyear made it back-to-back Brant Tolsma Invitational victories in the women's 800. Her 2:11.46 clocking won the four-lap race by more than two seconds over Shayla Cann of Elon.
Making her season debut, defending CUSA women's 60 champion Reese Webster placed third in the event on Saturday. Her time of 7.38 made the junior one of three runners to dip under the previous meet record of 7.41.
In the women's shot put, Bethany Tate (fourth place, 47-4.25), Meredith Engle (fifth, 46-7.5) and Tabby DeJong (eighth, 44-4.75) all added more than a foot to their previous personal-best marks. Tate moves up to No. 7 in program history, while Engle joins the list at No. 8.
It was the second big personal best/top 10 mark by Engle in as many days. She previously moved into a tie for 10th on the Lady Flames' all-time list with her 18-11.25 long jump on Friday.
Mia Bowers continued her impressive senior season, pole vaulting a lifetime-best 13-2.25 for third place in the competition and No. 4 all-time at Liberty.
Fellow senior Kacy Cox triple jumped a personal-best 38-9.75 for fifth place.
Freshman Rachel Hill clocked a personal-best 2:58.19 1,000 for fifth place and joined classmate Emma Ervi in breaking 5:00 in the mile. Ervi placed ninth in 4:58.92, while Hill crossed the line 10th in 4:59.58.
Men's Day 3 Recap
As he has been known to do at this facility, Smith pulled out some round six magic in the men's triple jump. The junior's 49-2.5 effort on his final attempt defeated VCU's Isaiah-Taji Kargbo-Owens by one centimeter for top honors.
Holub's first appearance in a Liberty uniform resulted in a men's mile victory, thanks to a 4:15.64 clocking. Teammate Kyle Thrush (4:17.46) placed second to Holub in the heat and fourth overall.
Running his first 60 in a Flames uniform, Eddy Vu blazed to a time of 6.74 in the men's 60 prelims. That ties him with Diamantae Griffin and Brandon Letts for No. 4 in program history. Vu then took fourth in the final in 6.82 as the Flames' Troy McKnight (6.74) earned his second victory of the meet (also Friday's 200), competing unattached.
Freshman Trevor Veenstra recorded his second top-three finish of the weekend, taking runner-up honors in the men's shot put at 52-11. Christian Hicks' personal-best mark of 50-10 was good for fourth.
Speaking of talented freshmen in the field events, Todd Benhase came in fifth in the men's pole vault with a top clearance of 15-6.5.
