LYNCHBURG, Va. – Host Liberty won a pair of events on Friday, the second day of the fifth annual Brant Tolsma Invitational. Kellen Kimes (men's weight throw) and Emory Pafford (women's pole vault section B) both came away victorious at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
Men's Day 2 Recap
Kimes recorded the first victory of his collegiate career after overtaking Gardner-Webb's Quentin Peterson with a 61-2.25 effort in round five. Fellow Flames freshman Trevor Veenstra followed in third place with a 55-0.75 which added more than a foot to his previous best.
Running their first 200s of the season, Revell Webster (21.43) and Eddy Vu (21.68) placed second and fifth, respectively. The only runner to beat Webster was Liberty's Troy McKnight (21.35), competing unattached.
Hunter Bleam (fourth place, 4,940 points) and Samuel O'Regan (ninth place, 4,658 points) both wrapped up the heptathlon competition with significant personal-best scores.
In the night's final event to conclude (men's long jump), Joshua Smith earned an eighth-place finish with an indoor personal-best 22-11.75 leap. Competing unattached, the Flames' Markus White took third place at 23-10.
Women's Day 2 Recap
Pafford made a first-attempt clearance at a season-best 11-5.75 to claim victory in section B of the women's pole vault.
Meredith Engle stretched the tape to a personal-best 18-11.25 in the women's long jump. That was good for fourth in the event and a tie with Dana Mercer for No. 10 all-time at Liberty.
Paola Bueno led the way for the Lady Flames' weight throwers, finishing third at 60-5.25.
Raini Mayo headlined Liberty's distance crew with a 25th-place finish in the women's 3K. A 10:18.71 clocking makes her the 10th Lady Flame to break 10:20 this year and the fourth freshman to do so.
