Liberty Men’s Tennis Adds Joaquim de Almeida to 2024-25 Lineup

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty men's tennis team continues to add talent, announcing the addition of Joaquim De Almeida. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native joins Liberty following a year off from collegiate athletics following two seasons of collegiate tennis at VCU (2021-23). He marks the fourth addition to Liberty's 2024-25 roster alongside Carl Roothman (Oklahoma State) and Trey Lipscomb (Clemson) Siwanat Auytayakul (freshman).
Almeida helped lead VCU to back-to-back Atlantic 10 (A10) titles, receiving mentions as the A10 Most Outstanding Rookie in 2022 and the A10 All-Conference second team in 2023.
In his freshman season (2021-22), Almeida received four A10 Rookie of the Week honors while compiling 24 total victories his freshman year (11 singles, 13 doubles). He achieved eight consecutive singles triumphs from March 26-May 6. The next season, Almeida collected 26 total spring victories (10 singles, 16 doubles) including a 2-0 mark in the No. 3 singles position. Almeida went undefeated in conference (A10) play in his sophomore season (3-0 doubles, 4-0 singles).
Almeida has participated in multiple tournaments this year including doubles titles at the M15 Santiago (April) and the M25 Trelew (May), he also finished as a doubles finalist at the M15 Belem in July. Almeida was a champion at the J4 Santiago Doubles and the vice-champion of the G3 Bahia Juniors Cup, J2 Neuquen Doubles before playing at VCU.
His brother, Joao Almeida is the head coach for both men's and women's tennis at Southern Baptist University since the 2021-2022 season.
With the addition of Almeida, the Flames (17-8) are looking to improve on a 2024 spring season in which the team achieved a high ranking of No. 45 in the ITA team rankings. The spring season concluded with a second-place finish in the 2024 CUSA Men's Tennis Championship and a semifinal run at the 2024 UTR Sports NIT Championships.
