Cartwright, Doan Headline Liberty’s Successful Senior Day
5/1/2024 11:22:00 PM | Track and Field
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The host Flames celebrated 19 seniors during Wednesday's Liberty Twilight Qualifier, five of whom won events on a warm, sun-drenched day at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex. Senior Calli Doan punctuated the meet with a facility-record 2:05.92 800, several hours after teammate Indea Cartwright had raced to a pair of program records in the women's 100 hurdles (13.20 followed by 13.15).
Liberty's other senior event champions included Nimeesha Coleman (women's 400 hurdles – 1:04.27), Megan Mann (women's shot put – 46-6.25), Makenzy Mizera (women's triple jump – 39-8.75) and Kyle Harkabus (men's 1,500 – 3:42.78).
Cartwright was one of the Flames' four non-seniors to post first-place finishes. Luke Anderson (men's 110 hurdles – 14.38) and Jacob Torres (men's 400 hurdles – 53.19) completed Liberty's sweep of the four hurdles races on the day, while men's hammer novice Desmond Coleman won the event at 195-5.
Doan set the lone facility record of the day at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex during the first meet contested at the facility since the April 18 passing of program founder and former head coach Jake Matthes.
Women's Meet Recap
One of the meet's most eagerly-anticipated events, the women's 800 lived up to the hype. Doan's personal-best 2:05.92 effort took down the facility record of 2:06.24 set by Wake Forest's Johanna Schulz at the 2019 Liberty Twilight Qualifier.
Doan now ranks No. 2 in program history behind Wednesday's runner-up, Katelyn Locker (2:06.62). Future Lady Flame Allie Zealand raced to third place in a new personal best of her own, 2:07.06, ranking No. 12 nationally among high schoolers this year.
Cartwright set the Liberty women's 100 hurdles standard for the third and fourth time this season, clocking 13.20 in the prelims and 13.15 to dominate the final. Both times were wind-legal, with her 13.15 effort aided by just a 0.4 m/s tailwind.
Mann (46-6.25) held off teammate Efe Latham's personal-best 46-1.5 effort to win the women's shot put crown. Runner-up Latham climbed to No. 7 all-time for the Lady Flames.
Liberty placed second in each of the other three women's throwing events, including Mann in both the discus (156-10) and hammer (182-8). Mackenzie Ballivian's season-best 125-0 took second in the javelin.
Mizera's 39-8.75 triple jump effort edged out Hampton's Dieusi Armand by an inch and a half for victory. Mizera also claimed long jump runner-up honors with a season-best 19-9 performance that trailed only former Lady Flame and current director of operations Ayanna Johnson (19-11.75).
Coleman joined brother Desmond as event champions on Wednesday, thanks to a season-best 400 hurdles clocking of 1:04.27.
Katie Urbine continued her impressive freshman campaign with a third-place women's pole vault finish (13-3.75).
Two other first-year Lady Flames also soared high in the women's vertical jumps, including Colleen Schaner (season-best 12-4 pole vault for seventh place in the event and a tie for eighth in program history) and Eva Whiteman (season-best 5-6 high jump for second in the event and a tie for 10th all-time at Liberty).
Ryann Aycock was another freshman who excelled for the Lady Flames, pacing the team's nine 1,500 runners with a runner-up finish in a personal-best. Aycock has now improved from 4:44.21 to 4:39.15 to 4:33.92 to 4:30.07 the four times she has contested the event this season.
Men's Meet Recap
Harkabus won a competitive men's 1,500 in 3:42.78 for his second 1,500 triumph in six days. He had previously won the Charlotte Invitational 1,500 on Friday in a personal-best 3:42.10.
Not far behind Harkabus was Edwin Kiprop, placing fourth in a Liberty freshman-record 3:44.39. That took down the previous mark of 3:45.28 established by Will Jefferson at the 2022 Liberty Twilight Qualifier. Kiprop's second Liberty freshman standard this season (also a 13:47.63 5K) lands him at No. 5 on the Flames' all-time chart.
Anderson raced to victory in the men's 110 hurdles final in 14.38, following a personal-best 14.31 effort (No. 8 in program history) during the prelims.
Later, Anderson closed out Liberty's 1-2-3 sweep of the men's 400 hurdles in 53.96. He trailed only teammates Torres (season-best 53.19) and Josh Blalock (personal-best 53.27).
The second hammer competition of Desmond Coleman's career resulted in his first victory. Coleman's winning throw measured 195-5.
