LYNCHBURG, Va. – Two of Liberty's event winners from the Virginia Challenge have earned CUSA weekly honors. Men's hammer champion John Hicks was named CUSA Male Field Athlete of the Week, while men's 200 victor Omari Lewis was tabbed CUSA Male Track Athlete of the Week.
Hicks' first CUSA outdoor weekly award is his second overall. He garnered the same recognition during the indoor season on Feb. 6. Meanwhile, Lewis is now a back-to-back CUSA Male Track Athlete of the Week.
A native of Romney, W.Va., Hicks unleashed a personal-best 218-6 effort to win the men's hammer on Saturday. He now owns CUSA's best throw of the season by 10.5 feet and ranks No. 33 nationally. Hicks closed to within less than four feet of Jon Hart's program record (222-4) which has stood since 2008.
For the second week in a row, Lewis won the men's 200 in Charlottesville while recording a new personal-best time. This week, he raced to the Virginia Challenge title in a personal-best and wind-legal 20.56. Lewis ranks No. 1 in CUSA, No. 33 in the NCAA and tied with Donald McClinton (2022) for No. 2 all-time for the Flames.
Liberty will send athletes to two different meets this week, including the Charlotte Invitational on Friday and the Virginia High Performance on Sunday.
