CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Liberty closed out its two-day stay at the Virginia Challenge with a trio of Saturday victories. John Hicks (men's hammer), Omari Lewis (men's 200) and Indea Cartwright (women's 100 hurdles) each won their events on a sunny day at Lannigan Field.
Men's Day 2 Recap
Hicks' impressive men's hammer series included the top two marks of the competition (218-5 and 216-8) and the top two efforts of his career. The senior improved upon his personal best of 216-4 from the 2022 Meet of Champions at High Point and pulled within four feet of Jon Hart's program record (222-4) that has stood since 2008.
For the second Saturday in a row, Lewis won a men's 200 race in Charlottesville in a new personal-best time. A week ago, the Trinidad and Tobago native took top honors at the Virginia Grand Prix in 20.70. This time around, Lewis clocked a wind-legal 20.56 to reach the finish line first once again. He moves into a tie for the No. 2 spot in program history, matching Donald McClinton's performance from the 2022 ASUN Championship.
Earlier in the afternoon, Lewis had teamed up with Albrey Gossett, Jacob Torres and Revell Webster to place fourth in the men's 4 x 100 relay in 40.69.
Gossett's day also included a season-best 14.29 clocking for seventh place in the men's 110 hurdles. The fastest time by a Flame so far in 2024, it ranks No. 7 all-time at Liberty.
Luke Anderson followed with an 11th-place finish in the 110 hurdles, posting the fastest wind-legal time of his career, 14.43. Anderson later placed a team-best 14th in the men's 400 hurdles in 53.90.
Women's Day 2 Recap
Cartwright followed up her win in the Virginia Grand Prix women's 100 hurdles with another one in the Virginia Challenge on Saturday. She finished just one hundredth of a second slower than her own program record time, clocking 13.29 despite battling a slight headwind. Cartwright dominated the field, as her nearest competitor (Villanova's Jane Livingston) was nearly four tenths of a second behind.
Annika Hantho started off Liberty's Saturday in impressive fashion in the women's hammer. After arriving at Charlottesville with a 181-9 personal best, Hantho topped that mark on each of her first four attempts. Her 191-6 performance in round three earned fifth place in the event and the No. 8 spot on Liberty's all-time chart.
Sophomore Rebecca Allen converted a nice tailwind into the two top long jump marks of her career, 19-3.5 and 19-4. She came in eighth in the event and joined the Lady Flames' all-time top 10 at No. 7.
