AZUSA, Calif. – Racing her first steeplechase in 10 months, Liberty All-American Calli Doan showed no signs of rust, Thursday evening at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Her time of 10:03.90 was the fastest by a Conference USA runner in 15 years and ranks No. 12 in the NCAA this season.
Doan's last steeplechase race had seen her place 11th in the 2023 NCAA Division I national final, earning second team All-America honors. Fast forward to Thursday, and the redshirt senior from Apex, N.C. ran 10:03.90 to place sixth in her heat and 19th overall.
Doan, who now owns the nine fastest women's steeplechase clockings in program history, became the fastest CUSA performer since Rice's Lennie Waite posted a 9:50.48 at the 2009 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Doan's result on Thursday also punches her ticket to next month's NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet in Lexington, Ky. It will be her third career appearance at the meet.
The only other Liberty runner to take the track on Thursday, Nicholas Kiprotich notched the fastest men's 10K time by a CUSA athlete thus far in 2024, 30:21.86.
