Liberty led 3-0 as pitcher Nick Moran held East Carolina scoreless through the first five innings before East Carolina scored three runs in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. The Pirates then took the lead on a throwing error in the seventh.
In the ninth, the Flames had the tying runs on base with two outs, only to see East Carolina reliever Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman get the next batter to fly out to close out the visitors' victory.
Center fielder Kane Kepley, left fielder Noah Rabon, first baseman Brian McClellin and shortstop Tanner Marsh each had two hits in the contest for the Flames.
Liberty drops to 5-9 on the year. East Carolina moves to 9-4.
