Cartwright Lowers 100 Hurdles Record on Big Day at Florida Relays

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Liberty's Indea Cartwright broke the program women's 100 hurdles record for the second week in a row, Saturday at the Florida Relays. Her blazing 13.28 performance was the headliner for the Flames' successful day at Percy Beard Track.
Katelyn Locker nearly set a school record of her own with a personal-best 2:06.15 800, Desmond Coleman became the third Flame ever to throw the discus over 60 meters (198-7, 60.53m) and Reese Webster's first 100 dash at Liberty resulted in a personal-best 11.36 clocking which ranks No. 2 in program history.
Cartwright, Locker and Webster became the Lady Flames' most recent NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round qualifiers on a warm, sunny day in the Sunshine State.
Women's Day 2 Recap
After clocking a Liberty-record 100 hurdles time of 13.53 at last Saturday's Bob Davidson Team Challenge, Cartwright improved upon that mark twice. She ran 13.28 in the prelims and followed it up with a 13.38 clocking for eighth place in the final.
Cartwright's 13.28 effort set a lifetime best, eclipsing her 13.36 performance at last year's Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic while competing unattached. It was also the top wind-legal (1.4 m/s tailwind) time in program history, shattering Jasmine Williams' 13.69 clocking at the 2023 ASUN meet.
Although she failed to join Cartwright in the final, first-year Lady Flame Ahvon Mitchell also ran well in the prelims. Her personal-best 13.80 time makes Mitchell the seventh Liberty runner ever to dip below 14 seconds for the event.
Locker's lifetime-best 800 time of 2:06.15 was tantalizingly close to setting a school record. But alas, Jaime Watson's 2:06.09 performance from the 2010 Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational lives to see another day.
Teammate Jessica Palisca followed in a season-best 2:11.92, narrowly missing her outdoor personal best of 2:11.56.
Just as she did in Friday's 200 with a 23.23 clocking, Webster made a strong first impression in her Liberty 100 debut on Saturday. Her personal-best 11.36 effort, good for seventh place in the event, trails only Isis Brooks (11.23) on Liberty's all-time list.
Freshman Eva Whiteman notched the Lady Flames' top event finish on the day, tying for third in the open women's high jump with a season-best 5-3.25 clearance.
Megan Mann led the way in both of Saturday's women's throwing events, taking 10th in the open shot put (42-6.75) and 12th in the discus (152-9).
Men's Day 2 Recap
Coleman's personal-best 198-7 performance was good for third place in the invitational section of the men's discus. He joins All-Americans Clendon Henderson and Kevin Nedrick as the only Flames ever to exceed 60 meters in the event.
Just before Coleman stepped into the ring, Christian Hicks (season-best 176-2) and Beau Backes (168-6) placed second and fifth, respectively, in the men's discus open section. Hicks landed just two inches away from his personal best and put himself in contention for a return trip to the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet.
Coming off a wind-aided school-record 10.18 clocking in the Bob Davidson Team Challenge 100 final a week ago, Omari Lewis ran a wind-legal (0.7 m/s tailwind) 10.29 for fifth place.
Hunter Flack made it over a lifetime-best 16-0.75 on his third attempt, securing a 10th-place men's pole vault finish.
Running his first 800 since winning the CUSA indoor title, Brendan Pitcher crossed the finish line in 1:49.32, narrowly missing his lifetime best of 1:49.29.
Another CUSA indoor event champion, Joshua Smith recorded his best outdoor triple jump mark of 48-4.
