RALEIGH, N.C. – Kyle Harkabus recorded Liberty's top performance on the opening day of the Raleigh Relays, Thursday evening at Paul Derr Track. His personal-best 5K time of 14:05.34 ranks No. 10 all-time for the Flames.
Taking advantage of ideal distance running conditions with temperatures in the low-50s, Harkabus slashed 18 seconds off his previous 5K best from 2021. His time of 14:05.34 edged out Josh MacDonald's 14:05.87 effort, achieved 10 years ago to the day at the Raleigh Relays, for No. 10 in program history.
A trio of current Flames now appear on the all-time top 10 chart, including Will Jefferson (No. 5, 13:56.51 from 2022), Tristian Merchant (No. 7, 13:57.34 from 2023) and Harkabus.
Competing in his first 5K since winning the CUSA indoor title a month ago, freshman Edwin Kiprop nearly joined the top 10 list himself. He crossed the finish line in a personal-best 14:07.41, one heat before Harkabus took the track.
Merchant, the 2023 ASUN men's 10K champion, competed unattached in the night's final race. He was able to lower his 10K personal best by just over a second, posting a 29:24.95.
