PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The No. 66 Lady Flames tennis team falls just short of a comeback bid, bested 4-2 by Wichita State in a neutral site match on Wednesday. The match was the second of two matches this week at the Monterey Country Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
Liberty dropped the doubles point to Wichita State with defeats on courts two and one. Maria Juliana Parra Romero tied the match at 1-1 before the Shockers responded with two straight victories on courts two and six. The Lady Flames tightened the match with a Daniella O'Neill victory on court four.
Down 3-2 with just two matches on the match hinged on a handful of points. Both matches on courts three and five went three sets and were both knotted at 5-5. After sharing break points to make it 5-5, Maria Turchetto ran out of time on court five, falling 4-6, 6-0, 7-5.
Liberty falls to Wichita State in its first-ever matchup and drops to 2-5 away from Lynchburg this season.
Thoughts from Head Coach Jeff Maren
"I'm very disappointed in our inability to finish this match properly. We put ourselves in a position to win and did not close the door. I hope that we can learn from this match and get better as a result. To God be the Glory!"
