LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty's Maria Juliana Parra Romero has been named the Conference USA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
This is Liberty's first CUSA award of the spring season. Marina Davtyan received the CUSA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Month on Oct. 10. Parra Romero receives her fourth career conference player of the week recognition. The junior previously received the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week three times between the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Parra Romero was 1-1 (1-0 singles, 0-1 doubles) on Saturday but secured the match winning fourth point in the No. 1 singles match in a 4-3 victory over Delaware. With partner Sadie Daavetilla, the pair was unable to secure a victory in the No. 1 doubles match, falling 7-5 to kick off the day.
Parra Romero, following an hour-long doubles match, battled through a grueling three-hour match on court one. Facing Slade Coetzee, Parra Romero dropped an intense first set tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6). The sophomore persevered, fighting off multiple comeback attempts from her opponent in the second set, she hung on to grab the second set 7-5. Parra Romero took care of business in a competitive, back-and-forth set the score may not reflect to win the match for the Lady Flames 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-1.
The Bucaramanga, Colombia native owns a 2-1 singles record in 2024, making all but one appearance in the No. 1 singles position.
Liberty (4-1) prepares for three matches in a three day stretch as it takes on undefeated VCU (6-0) at home on Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center. The Lady Flames then hit the road for a neutral site match on Sunday in South Carolina against Harvard (4-1), hosted by Furman, at 1 p.m. Liberty then faces Furman (1-2) on Monday at 3 p.m.
