Joseph Carter, Liberty's top defender during the 2024 season, has also been named the best linebacker in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Carter has been named the Linebacker of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Richmond, joining eight other players who have been honored at their specific positions.

Carter leads the Flames in 2024 with a career-high 83 tackles, including a team-high 41 solo stops. He also has added 5.0 tackles for a loss (18 yards), 1.5 sacks (8 yards) and two pass breakups.

The native of Jacksonville, Fla., posted five games where he finished the contest with 10 or more tackles. He recorded a single-game high of 13 stops during Liberty's Conference USA victory over UTEP on September 14.

The junior has seen playing time in all 11 games in 2024, starting 10 contests. He ranks 10th in Conference USA in tackles per game (7.5).

Carter is the No. 7 ranked overall defender in Conference USA by PFF.com (overall grade: 81.2) and the No. 2 ranked linebacker by the website.

Carter and the Flames are now preparing for their sixth-straight bowl game appearance. Liberty, representing Conference USA, and Buffalo, representing the Mid-American Conference, will square off in the Bahamas Bowl on January 4.

The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2 from Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas. Kickoff for the game is set for 11 a.m. EST.
