
Liberty Defense Shines in 3-1 Win Over Sam Houston

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Liberty earned a series sweep of Sam Houston, posting season highs in both blocks and digs on the way to a 3-1 victory (25-13, 24-26, 25-20, 26-24) over the Bearkats, Saturday at Liberty Arena.
The Lady Flames (13-13, 7-7 CUSA) won both matches by 3-1 scores this weekend. Meanwhile, Sam Houston falls to 13-12, 8-6 in Conference USA matches.

- Liberty outhit Sam Houston, .165-.012. The Lady Flames also led in kills (57-36), assists (55-35, digs (86-80) and blocks (18.5-13.0), while the Bearkats led 8-5 in aces.
- Kate Gammer recorded her 34th career double-double, 10th this season and fourth in a row, scoring a match-high 18 kills to go along with 13 digs. Madison Blane posted a Liberty Arena-record and program rally-scoring-record-tying 13 blocks, while Erica Lowery tied the Liberty Arena record with 30 digs. Kamryn Bacus sent down 13 kills, while Elizabeth Helmich registered 11 kills, nine digs and six blocks. Autumn Flowers posted eight kills and five blocks, while Charli Crowson dished out a match-high 28 assists and added nine digs.
- Lillian Hamilton led Sam Houston was 14 kills and nine blocks. Hannah Baker collected 28 digs, while Avery Fowler recorded 21 assists, four aces and 10 digs. McKenzie Morvant totaled six blocks, while Shaelin White collected 10 digs.
- After Liberty ran away with a 25-13 decision in set one, Sam Houston outlasted the Lady Flames 26-24 in the second set.
- The hosts won set three, 25-20, and led the fourth set 24-22 before the Bearkats fought off two match point tries to tie it at 24-24. Gammer then scored a kill, and Liberty fittingly ended the match with a block, by Blane and Bacus.
- Liberty leads the all-time series against Sam Houston, 4-0, with all four meetings ending in 3-1 Lady Flames victories.
- Liberty's 18.5 blocks were its most in a single match since posting 19 blocks versus Austin Peay, Oct. 28, 2022.
- Lowery's 30 digs tied Darian Markham of New Mexico's Liberty Arena record, set Oct. 8, 2023. Lowery is the first Lady Flame to collect 30 or more digs in a match since Margaret Latchford corralled 30 digs against Elon, Sept. 2, 2017.
- Lowey passed Cristi Cherry (1995-98) into 19th place at Liberty with 1,054 digs as a Lady Flame.
- Blane's 13 blocks broke her own Liberty Arena record of 12, which she tied last night. She also tied Loren Thomas' (Oct. 21, 2011 at Winthrop) program single-match rally-scoring record with 13 blocks.
- Blane is now tied with Kendle Rollins (2010-13) for fifth in program history with 423 career blocks. Rollins (Nov. 1-8, 2013) is the only other Lady Flame to post back-to-back double-digit block matches in program rally-scoring history.
- Today was the ninth time this season and 33rd time in their careers that Gammer and Bacus have scored 10 or more kills in the same match. Liberty is 25-8 in those matches.
- This was the eighth time this season that three Lady Flames reached double figures in kills in the same match. Liberty is 6-2 in matches where the team has three or more 10-kill players.
- The Lady Flames are 7-2 on Saturday this season, while also holding a 9-13 record in sets decided by two points and 3-7 mark in extended sets.Â
