Chadwell Named to Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award Watch List

Following an historic season in 2023 and an undefeated start to 2024, Liberty Head Coach Jamey Chadwell has been named to the Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year Award Watch List.
Chadwell was one of six coaches named to the award's Group of Five Conferences Coach of the Year watch list members. The list includes head coaches from the Group of Five conference schools, independent programs and teams in the Pac-12 Conference.
The Flames' second-year skipper was joined on the list by Spencer Danielson (Boise State),
Marcus Freeman (Notre Dame), Jeff Monken (Army), Brian Newberry (Navy) and Bryant Vincent (University of Louisiana Monroe).
Chadwell was named the Paul "Bear" Bryant Group of Five Conference Coach of the Year award winner last year. During his first season on the Mountain, Chadwell led the Flames to unprecedented success in 2023.
Liberty entered bowl season with a perfect 13-0 record and was one of four undefeated teams in the country, joining Florida State, Washington and eventual national champion Michigan.
Chadwell guided the Flames to an unblemished 8-0 regular season record in Conference USA and a 49-35 win over New Mexico State in the CUSA Football Championship game.
Chadwell's success positioned the Flames to receive their first-ever invitation to play in a New Year's Six bowl game. Liberty squared off against No. 8 Oregon in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl on January 1 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
Midway through the 2024 season, Chadwell has the Flames positioned again to challenge for a second Conference USA title.
Entering next week's midweek matchup against Kennesaw State, Liberty sits atop the Conference USA standings with a perfect 3-0 league record and an overall 5-0 mark.
A total of 27 college football coaches make up the American Heart Association's 2024 Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year Award watch list, a list of current coaches in consideration for the annual top honor.
The award, given each January to a college football coach, recognizes contributions that make the sport better for athletes and fans alike by demonstrating grit, integrity and a winning approach to coaching and life – both on and off the field.
The American Heart Association, the leading voluntary health organization devoted to a world of longer, healthier lives for all for more than 100 years, and the Bryant family present this award annually to celebrate Bear Bryant's legacy and raise awareness and critical funds for scientific research to eliminate needless suffering and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke, the leading causes of death globally. The football coaching legend died from a heart attack in 1983.
Now in its 39th year, the Coach of the Year award winner will be announced live from Houston's Post Oak Hotel on Wednesday, January 22, 2024, during an awards ceremony presented by Marathon Oil. The National Sports Media Association, the Bryant Awards' Executive Leadership Team and the Bryant Family voted on the watch list, finalists and Coach of the Year recipient.
