LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty's Luis Felipe Miguel has been awarded the Conference USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week recognition, the conference announced Wednesday.
Miguel went 4-0 (2-0 doubles. 2-0 singles) across two matches on Saturday, securing the clinching doubles point in both matches and the match-winning fourth point against JMU.
Miguel is Liberty's first CUSA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week but its second conference award winner this year. Thando Longwe-Smit garnered the CUSA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Month distinction on Oct. 10.
The award is Miguel's second weekly conference award, previously receiving the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week Award on March 8, 2023. With James Madison and Longwood coming into Lynchburg for a doubleheader on Saturday, the sophomore stepped up for the Flames.
In the clinching match for the doubles point against JMU, Miguel and Matija Samardzic faced a 4-2 deficit to Edson Sanchez and Francisco Sinopoli. The Flames' duo battled throughout the match and two clinching games down at 5-4 and 6-5. The duo forced a tiebreaker and sprinted ahead 4-0 to secure the doubles point and the 7-6 (7-2) final. Miguel went on to best Esteve Agusti in the No. 3 singles match 6-2, 6-2, and secured the match-clinching fourth point.
Facing Longwood, Miguel and Samardzic handled Alejandro Hernandez and Alejandro Uribe 6-3 in the No. 2 doubles match. The Goiania, Brazil native then played his first-ever match in the No. 1 singles position, dominating Timeo Puech in the second set to take a 7-5, 6-0 triumph.
