BLACKSBURG, Va. – First-year Liberty athletes Katie Urbine and Reese Webster stood out on Saturday, the final day of the Virginia Tech Invitational at Rector Field House. Urbine pole vaulted 13-0.25 to set her second Liberty freshman record of the year, while Webster (women's 200 – 24.16) raced to her second victory in as many days in Blacksburg.
Urbine got the Lady Flames' day off to a strong start by tying for 10th place in a loaded women's pole vault competition with her record-breaking 13-0.25 clearance. Her second-attempt success at that height took down Urbine's own Liberty freshman record of 12-11.5, set at the Liberty Kickoff on Dec. 1.
Urbine, who claimed sole possession of fourth place on Liberty's all-time list for the event, is the fifth Lady Flame ever to vault over 13 feet. She joins Andrea Wildrick, Rachel Milnes, Jessie Glynn and current assistant Taylen (Langin) Rey in that exclusive club.
Mia Bowers also performed well in Saturday's pole vault competition, making it over a season-best 12-6.25 for 15th place.
After winning the women's 60 in a program-record 7.37 Friday night, Webster took home the 200 crown in an indoor personal-best 24.16 Saturday afternoon.
The Trinidad and Tobago native now trails only Kimone Green (23.98 in 2018) and Abigail Flower (24.14 in 2015) on the Lady Flames' all-time list for the one-lap event.
Liberty also got impressive performances from freshmen in both the men's and women's 400. Simon Lamparelli won his heat and took fourth overall in the men's 400 with a 48.92 clocking. Classmate Maddy Merritt came in fifth in the women's event, crossing the line in 57.91.
