LYNCHBURG, Va. – Appropriately for a meet named for Liberty's legendary head coach, the first day of the fourth annual Brant Tolsma Invitational consisted solely of combined events. The host Flames boasted Thursday's top two performers, in pentathlon champion Patasha Bryan and heptathlon day one leader Cole Peterlin.
Bryan racked up 3,711 points to win her second pentathlon competition in as many starts this season (also the Liberty Kickoff on Dec. 1). The redshirt sophomore from Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. won both the shot put (38-1.5) and 800 (2:22.20) on her way to a 351-point triumph over runner-up Halle Perry of Queens.
Two of the Lady Flames' other three pentathletes in action on Thursday set new personal bests, including Sofia Van Arsdale (3,081 points for sixth place in Bryan's section) and Nimeesha Coleman (2,876 points for second place in the other pentathlon section).
Peterlin will take a 31-point lead into Friday after tallying 2,843 points during Thursday's quartet of heptathlon events. His day was highlighted by an indoor personal-best 21-2.75 long jump and a victory in the high jump (6-5.5).
