Men’s Tennis Opens Season at Penn Invitational, Friday to Sunday

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty men's tennis team kicks off its 2023-24 campaign this weekend as the squad heads to Philadelphia, Pa. for the Penn Invitational running Friday through Sunday. Liberty prepares to face Navy to open the tournament Friday at 1 p.m.
The eight-team event will be held at the Hamlin Tennis Center. Joining Liberty and Navy this weekend, are Dartmouth, Delaware, No. 53 Penn, St. Johns, Temple and Yale. Of the eight programs, No. 53 Penn was the only program to finish 2023 among the top-75 teams in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
The event will be a hidden dual format, allowing teams to compete in a fashion similar to a spring collegiate dual match.

Tournament Breakdown
All seven Flames on the fall roster will compete at the Penn Invitational. The roster is without four seniors graduating in 2023 but will have the help of two redshirt freshman, Ernst Gouws and Chase Robinson, and true freshman Matija Samardzic. The Flames will have four players this fall who did not participate in fall events in 2022 including, Luis Felipe Miguel, who did not join the team as a freshman until January.
Last fall, Thando Longwe-Smit paced the squad with 10 singles triumphs with Josh Wilson leading the team in overall victories with a 10-4 doubles and a 6-5 singles record, a 16-9 overall mark. The Flames' winningest doubles team last fall was Wilson and Worst with a 10-4 mark.
In 2022, Liberty opened the fall season at the Penn Invitational. The Flames are one of four returning participants, including the host Penn, Dartmouth and Temple. Longwe-Smit went undefeated (3-0) in singles at last year's event. The Flames went 15-7 in singles and 5-5 in doubles across last year's tournament.
