LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty will compete at the Conference USA Cross Country Championships for the first time on Oct. 28 in Bowling Green, Ky., highlighting the Flames' 2023 season schedule announced today.
The 2023 Liberty men's and women's cross country season will begin on Sept. 1, when the Flames and Lady Flames race in the Eye Opener in Spartanburg, S.C. Notes on each of Liberty's seven races are found below.
Sept. 1 – Eye Opener (Spartanburg, S.C.)
Liberty will open the 2023 campaign with its first visit to the Roger Milliken Center since the 2015 Big South Cross Country Championships were contested there. The Flames and Lady Flames will preview the course which will play host to the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships two months later.
Sept. 23 – Virginia Invitational (Charlottesville, Va.)
The level of competition will increase in earnest as the Lady Flames go head-to-head with many of the nation's top teams at nearby Panorama Farms, a course which will welcome the 2023 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships two months later.
Sept. 30 – Paul Short Run (Bethlehem, Pa.)
After four weeks away from competition, Liberty's full men's squad will head to the Paul Short Run for the first time since 2017. Last season, Catherine Farrell enjoyed a breakthrough performance in the Paul Short Run open women's 6K, placing second of 307 competitors.
Oct. 14 – XC-23 Pre-Nationals (Charlottesville, Va.)
The men's team will get its first look at the course for the 2023 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. Despite the proximity of Panorama Farms to campus, this will mark Liberty's first full men's and women's team competition there since Sept. 27, 2019 (Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational).
Oct. 28 – Conference USA Cross Country Championships (Bowling Green, Ky.)
Men's and women's cross country will be the first two Liberty teams to compete for Conference USA titles during its first season of league membership. Western Kentucky will host the meet at Hobson Grove Park. The meet figures to be wide open with last year's CUSA men's and women's champion (Charlotte) no longer part of the conference.
Nov. 10 – NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships (Spartanburg, S.C.)
The NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships will take place at the Roger Milliken Center in Spartanburg, S.C., for the first time. This meet, which determines the team and individual qualifiers to the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, has not been contested in South Carolina since 2018 (Rock Hill).
Nov. 18 – NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships (Charlottesville, Va.)
There is extra motivation for Liberty to qualify for this year's NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, as the meet will take place in Virginia for the first time since 1987, when the meet was contested at a different venue in Charlottesville.
