
Four Lady Flames Earn a Spot on VaSID All-State Women’s Tennis Teams

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Four Liberty women's tennis players, Maria Juliana Parra Romero, Esther Lovato, Marina Davtyan and Tiffany Nguyen, earned a selection to the 2023 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division Women's Tennis All-State teams on Thursday.
Parra Romero was honored with a VaSID All-State first team selection and a spot with her partner Nguyen on the all-state doubles second team. Lovato and Davtyan were each named to the all-state singles second team.
For Lovato, this is her fourth straight year of being named to a VaSID All-State team, becoming the first in program history to be named to an All-State team four times.
Davtyan is receiving her first VaSID All-State honor. Nguyen is receiving her second All-State selection after being recognized on the 2022 All-State singles team.
The Lady Flames put together one of their most successful campaigns in 2023. The squad compiled a 17-9 record that included a program high No. 66 ITA ranking. The four All-State players were instrumental in Liberty's successes after the team was dealt multiple injuries to expected contributors.
The VaSID All-State program honors the top collegiate student-athletes in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Nomination and voting are conducted by sports information directors within the Commonwealth. VaSID names 44 all-state teams in 23 sports each year, an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in Virginia.
Maria Juliana Parra Romero (VaSID All-State singles first team)
Parra Romero secured a spot on the ASUN All-Conference first team and received the ASUN Player of the Week award twice (Jan. 18, March 8). The sophomore finished the year second on the team in wins after compiling a 27-7 overall singles record while going 16-4 (6-2 ASUN) in the spring season. She put together the third most doubles wins on the team with a 21-11 overall record and a 13-10 (6-1 ASUN) spring record.
The Bucaramanga, Columbia native participated in the ITA All-American Championships where she secured a victory over Oregon's No. 107 Sophie Luescher. Parra Romero played all her singles matches from Liberty's No. 1 position that included a win over No. 32 Charlotte's Ruxi Schech, 6-0, 6-2.
Esther Lovato (VaSID All-State singles second team)
Lovato received mention on the ASUN All-Conference second team and ASUN Player of the Week honors on Feb. 8. The Austin, Texas native secured the Liberty program record for all-time singles wins with 96. Lovato was also named to the 2022-23 CSC Academic All-District Women's Tennis Team.
She led the team in singles wins for the year, putting together a 10-1 record in the fall and an 18-4 (6-2 ASUN) record in the spring, good for a 28-5 campaign, her 28 wins were tied for the second most single-season wins in program history. Lovato compiled a 17-10 doubles record for the year with a 4-3 fall mark and a 13-7 (8-0 ASUN) spring record.
Marina Davtyan (VaSID All-State singles second team)
Davtyan was named to the ASUN All-Conference second team after compiling a 14-6 (6-2 ASUN) spring season. For the year, Davtyan put together a 17-9 record, good for fourth most wins on the team. She compiled a 22-10 overall doubles record with a 7-4 fall and 15-6 (8-0 ASUN) spring season.
The Yerevan, Armenia native held a seven-match win streak from March 5 to March 29. She put together an impressive match-clinching win over Austin Peay's Denise Torrealba, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 6-4, to advance the Lady Flames to the ASUN semifinals.
Tiffany Nguyen/Maria Juliana Parra Romero (VaSID All-State doubles second team)
Nguyen and Parra Romero started playing together on March 17 and put together an 8-2 (6-1 ASUN) record playing all their matches in the No. 1 position to close out the spring season. Their performance netted them a No. 90 ITA national ranking on April 4.
The pair secured a victory over No. 59 Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder of Furman, 7-6 (6) on March 31. The two went unbeaten across seven matches from March 29 to April 16.
