
No. 1 Seed Ospreys Down No. 5 Seed Lady Flames 4-0 in ASUN Championship Semis

No. 1 seed and tournament host North Florida downed the No. 5-seeded Liberty Lady Flames 4-0, Friday afternoon in the semifinal round of the 2023 ASUN Women's Tennis Championship at the UNF Tennis Complex.
Liberty sees its season end with a 17-9 record. This is the third straight year the Lady Flames have won at least 17 matches. Liberty holds a 54-24 record during that span and reached the semifinals of the ASUN Championship (or further) in each of its four full seasons in the league.
Meanwhile, top-seeded UNF has earned a spot in Saturday afternoon's 1 p.m. final and will face either No. 2 seed FGCU (16-6) or No. 3 seed Stetson (17-7). The Eagles and Hatters square off in tonight's other semifinal in Jacksonville.

How It Happened
• UNF secured the opening point of the match for a 1-0 lead on the strength of its No. 1 and 2 units.
• Liberty's doubles win came on court three via Marina Davtyan and Esther Lovato, a dominant 6-0 winner over Annabelle Davis and Jasmin Makela. Davtyan and Lovato end the year on a high note with a 13-2 mark in the No. 3 slot, a five-match winning streak and a 17-5 record between spring and fall play.
• The Ospreys' top pairing, Kit Gulihur and Ana Paula Melilo, never trailed in their match with Tiffany Nguyen and Maria Juliana Parra Romero on the way to a 6-1 triumph. One court over at No. 2 doubles, Isabel Oliveira and Kendall Nash of the hosts took down Maretha Burger and Bruna Sampaio by a 6-3 score to clinch the doubles session.
• UNF won first sets on five of six courts to take control of the match.
• Fresh off a doubles victory, Nash (No. 5 singles) defeated Liberty's Elsa Kirch in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) to doubles UNF's advantage to 2-0. Makela (No. 6 singles) also prevailed in two sets over her counterpart, Liberty's Burger, 6-1, 6-3.
• Leading 3-0, the Ospreys' top player, No. 104 Gulihur, closed things out with a win over Parra Romero on court one. Gulihur needed to win a tiebreaker to do so but ended up on top 6-2, 7-6 (4).
• The three unfinished matches saw Liberty's Lovato (No. 3 singles) leading by a set and up 4-3 in the second over Oliveira. Her doubles partner, Davtyan, had just won a set from Davis and was heading to a third set on court two. Finally, Nguyen trailed 6-5 to Melilo in the second set at No. 4 singles and was down a set.
• Liberty concludes its time in the league with a 5-4 record at the ASUN Tournament. The Lady Flames were a combined 24-6 in ASUN regular season matches.
• The Lady Flames fall to 1-2 all-time against the Ospreys. Friday's match marked the first time the two squads met in postseason competition.
