2023 ASUN Conference Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team
The Liberty women’s tennis program featured a program-record all-conference players in the 2023 ASUN Conference Women’s Tennis Postseason Honors & Awards.
For the second straight year, Maria Juliana Parra Romero has been selected to the ASUN All-Conference first team. Liberty’s second team All-ASUN selections include Esther Lovato and Marina Davtyan. Meanwhile, Tiffany Nguyen garnered inclusion on the ASUN All-Conference third team.
Parra Romero is the first player in program history to be selected to the All-ASUN first team two times. Lovato and Nguyen are both now three-time ASUN All-Conference honorees. Davtyan’s recognition is the first postseason honor of her Lady Flames career.
No. 5 seed Liberty (15-8, 6-2 ASUN) will start its quest for an ASUN title when it faces No. 12 seed Bellarmine (4-20, 1-7 ASUN) in the first round of the 2023 ASUN Women’s Tennis Championship, Saturday afternoon. First serve is noon Eastern at the Governors Tennis Courts in Clarksville, Tenn.
Maria Juliana Parra Romero (ASUN All-Conference first team)
A two-time ASUN Player of the Week this season (Jan. 18 and March 8), Parra Romero holds a 15-3 record in the No. 1 singles position, including a 6-2 ASUN mark.
In doubles, Parra Romero and her current partner Tiffany Nguyen earned a No. 90 national ranking in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings on April 4. The duo is 7-1 this spring and has won five straight contests. The sophomore is 6-1 overall in ASUN doubles bouts and also sports a 12-9 dual match (10-8 No. 1, 2-1 No. 2) mark.
Between spring and fall play, Parra Romero is 26-6 in singles, tied for the most wins with Esther Lovato (26-5). The Bucaramanaga, Colombia native holds a 20-10 overall doubles record on the year, tied for the second most victories on the squad.
Esther Lovato (ASUN All-Conference second team)
Lovato was named ASUN Player of the Week on Feb. 8 for the second time in her career. The Austin, Texas native leads the team with 16 spring singles triumphs while playing in the No. 2-4 slots in the lineup (7-3 No. 2, 6-1 No. 3, 3-0 No. 4). She became the program’s all-time singles wins leader with a victory against Stetson and is now up to 94 wins. Collectively, Lovato is 26-5 in singles this year between spring and fall matches.
Lovato is 6-2 in ASUN singles matches and a perfect 8-0 in ASUN doubles bouts. In doubles, Lovato and Marina Davtyan lead all Liberty pairings this spring with 11 wins against only two losses (all at No. 3 doubles) and a perfect 8-0 ASUN mark.
Marina Davtyan (ASUN All-Conference second team)
Davtyan has collected 12 singles wins on the spring while spending time in the No. 2-4 positions in the lineup. The Yerevan, Armenia native finished the regular season with a 6-2 mark in ASUN singles contests. Davtyan is 15-9 in singles during the 2022-23 campaign.
In doubles, Davtyan and Lovato are 11-2 in the No. 3 position and 8-0 in the ASUN. She shares the team lead with 13 total doubles victories, this spring.
Tiffany Nguyen (ASUN All-Conference third team)
Nguyen was tabbed ASUN Player of the Week for the second time in her career a week ago. The junior is tied for second on the squad with 15 spring singles wins and tied for the team lead with 13 doubles victories. Nguyen is 9-2 in the No. 4 singles slot, 4-1 in the No. 5 position and 2-2 in the No. 3 slot. The Thu Dau Mot, Vietnam native posted a 6-2 record in ASUN regular season singles matches. ‘
Nguyen and her current doubles partner Parra Romero are 7-1 and have won five straight contests entering postseason play. On the year, Nguyen leads all Lady Flames 22 total doubles victories (13 spring, nine fall). The junior has 19 singles triumphs between spring and fall competition.
