Liberty sophomore Maria Juliana Parra Romero has been selected as the ASUN Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for a second time this season.
Parra Romero’s honor is the third of her career. She is the second player in program history to earn three ASUN Player of the Week honors, joining Kalani Soli.
Parra Romero is one of two players in the ASUN this year to win two awards, joining North Florida’s No. 85-ranked Kit Gulihur. Liberty is the first team in the ASUN to receive three player of the week awards this season. Junior Esther Lovato was tabbed ASUN Player of the Week on Feb. 8 as well.
Parra Romero won three of her four matches last weekend against No. 32 Charlotte (Friday) and William & Mary (Sunday), both at home. On Sunday against the Tribe, she was victorious in both doubles and singles in helping the Lady Flames to a 5-2 triumph. In doubles, she teamed up with Alexandra Almborg on court one to win in dramatic fashion, 7-6 (5), over the Tribe’s Elisa Van Meeteren and Emma Fernald to take the doubles point.
In singles, Parra Romero clinched the victory for the hosts with a comeback three-set victory (3-6, 6-1, 6-3) against Hedda Gurholt in the No. 1 slot. The win provided the Lady Flames a 4-2 edge in the eventual 5-2 win.
On Friday against the No. 32-ranked Charlotte 49ers, Parra Romero was the lone Liberty competitor to win in singles, cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 result over Ruxi Schech.
Parra Romero sports a 9-1 record in the No. 1 singles position this spring in leading the Lady Flames to a No. 68 national ranking.
Parra Romero and No. 68 Liberty (9-4) are back in action on Thursday morning at Coastal Carolina (5-4). First serve between the Lady Flames and Chanticleers is slated for 10 a.m.
