3/4/2023 7:26:00 PM | Men's Tennis
The No. 72 Liberty Flames took down the No. 70 Charlotte 49ers 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Tennis Complex.
Liberty improves to 5-6 on the year, while Charlotte slips to 4-7. The victory comes after the Flames (5-6) were ranked for the first time this season in the latest ITA Collegiate Rankings on Tuesday. This is Liberty's second ranked victory in the last nine days. The Flames downed No. 46 Penn State 6-1 on Feb. 24.
The Flames take a 4-2 lead in the all-time series.
Liberty started out hot, snagging the doubles point with wins on court one and two and kept that momentum up going into the singles round. Liberty got the match score to 3-0 with wins on court five and two before Charlotte won the next two matches on courts four and three to get the score to 3-2. Liberty won the match in dramatic fashion on court six with freshman Luis Felipe Miguel getting the clutch three-set win 6-4, 6-7 (1), 6-2 to secure the victory.
Liberty finishes the five-match home stretch with a 2-3 mark, with both victories coming against ranked competition (No. 46 Penn State and No. 70 Charlotte). The Flames also faced No. 64 South Florida during the home stint as well as VCU and Clemson. The Rams are currently ranked No. 27, while the Tigers are in the 44 slot.
Liberty improves to 4-4 at home in front of Flames Nation this season.
