Liberty men’s tennis senior Christiaan Worst earned his first career ASUN Men’s Tennis Player of the Week honor.
Worst is the second ASUN Player of the Week recipient this year, joining Josh Wilson, who earned the recognition exactly a month ago. The Pretoria, South Africa went a combined 4-0 (2-0 doubles, 2-0 singles) in home matches against No. 46 Penn State and No. 64 South Florida, last Friday and Sunday.
Worst is the sixth player in Flames program history to garner the distinction and Liberty’s 21st-ever ASUN Player of the Week in five years in the league.
“I know I speak for the entire team here when I say that we’re pumped for Christiaan,” stated Liberty Men’s Tennis Associate Head Coach Trevor Foshey. “Christiaan is one of the most humble and coachable players I have ever been around. It’s well deserved. Go Flames!”
Worst went 2-0 in No. 1 doubles and 2-0 in the No. 4 singles slot. In Friday’s 6-1 win over No. 46 Penn State, Worst teamed up with Josh Wilson for a 6-3 win over Malik Bhatnagar and Charl Morgan on court one, helping the Flames win the doubles point. In singles, the senior clinched the victory for the hosts by besting Sam Bossem 7-5, 6-3 on court four.
On Sunday against the No. 64 USF Bulls, Worst and Wilson were victorious again in the No. 1 position, topping Davide Tortora and Bruno Oliveira 6-2. The Flames won the doubles point against the Bulls. In singles, Worst battled past Tom Pisane in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5).
Worst and Wilson lead the team with a 5-4 mark (all at No. 1) in spring doubles and are 15-8 overall on the year. In singles, Worst is 6-4 overall, including a 4-2 record in the No. 4 position in the lineup.
Worst’s performance vaulted Liberty into the national rankings this week, as the Flames are No. 72 in the country at present.
Worst and the No. 72 Flames (4-6) are back in action against No. 70 Charlotte (4-6), Saturday afternoon. First serve is 1 p.m. from the Liberty Tennis Complex.
