One of the nation's elite defensive backs has garnered a first for Liberty as Brylan Green has been named to the 2023 Football Writers Association of America All-America Team (FWAA).
Green was named to the FWAA All-America second team earlier today, becoming the first player in program history to be named to the FWAA All-America Team at the FBS level.
Since moving up to the FBS level, Liberty has placed two players on FWAA Freshman All-American teams (2018 – Austin Lewis, DL; 2020 – Demario Douglas, WR).
Green was the lone representative from Conference USA on this All-America listing and one of 11 Group of Five players named to the FWAA All-America first or second teams.
Green has put together an outstanding year for the Flames, pacing Liberty's national leading defense. Liberty enters bowl season ranked No. 1 in the country in passes intercepted (21) with Green individually ranking No. 5 nationally in total interceptions (5) and No. 9 in interceptions per game (0.4).
The All-CUSA first-team selection has tallied 38 tackles this season through 12 games played, including 28 solo stops and 10 assisted tackles.
The native of Opelousas, La., has also recorded 3.0 tackles for a loss (7 yards), 1.0 sacks (5 yards) and ranks second on the team with eight passed defended.
Green recorded one of Liberty's seven forced fumbles, helping the Flames to currently rank No. 2 in the country in turnovers gained (25) and No. 15 in turnover margin (+0.69).
Green helped guide the Flames to an unblemished 8-0 regular season record in Conference USA and a 49-35 win over New Mexico State in the CUSA Football Championship game, Liberty's first-ever FBS conference title.
Liberty enters bowl season with a perfect 13-0 record and is one of four undefeated teams in the country, joining Florida State, Michigan and Washington.
The Flames' success positioned the team to receive their first-ever invitation to play in a New Year's Six bowl game. Liberty will square off against No. 8 Oregon in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl on January 1 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
Liberty enters the matchup against the Ducks ranked No. 18 in the latest Associated Press poll and No. 20 in the Coaches Poll. The Flames were ranked in the final three College Football Playoff rankings, a first in program history, and finished No. 23 in the last CFP rankings.
