LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty's top performer at Saturday's Paul Short Run, Nicholas Kiprotich has been tabbed Conference USA Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
Kiprotich, who collects the first conference weekly honor of his career, is the second Flame to win this award in 2023. Teammate Tristian Merchant was named CUSA Athlete of the Week on Sept. 5.
A junior from Eldoret, Kenya, Kiprotich finished a team-best fourth of 392 runners in the men's 8K gold race, the day's top-seeded competition in Bethlehem, Pa. He clocked a season-best time of 24:03.0 on a muddy course, posting his second top-five finish in as many races this fall.
Kiprotich helped the Liberty men's squad take fourth place out of 43 men's teams for the Flames' best-ever team showing in this meet's 49-year history. As a result, Liberty moved up to 10th in this week's USTFCCCA Southeast Region rankings.
Liberty's men's and women's cross country squads will be back in action at the XC-23 Pre-Nationals on Oct. 14. They will make the short trip up Route 29 to Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Va., to preview the course for next month's NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. The day's races are scheduled to be televised on ACC Network Extra.
