LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty's Ernst Gouws was the first and only Flame to play on the opening day of the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships, hosted by Liberty, on Wednesday. Gouws was impressive during the pre-qualifying round, picking up two wins to move into the third round which is set for Thursday.
Thoughts from Head Coach Derek Schwandt
"I think he worked through some nerves and brought a lot of energy and competed great, found a good level in the second match so we're looking to build on that. Ernie needs to continue to play with intention, build his patterns, play disciplined and bring that same type of passion tomorrow."
How it Happened
Gouws was matched up with Mount St Mary's Victor Mignot in the bronze draw. The Stellenbosch, South Africa native dropped the first set 6-4 but battled back to take the second set 6-2. Athletes from both the Liberty men's and women's tennis team came out in support of Gouws, cheering and urging Gouws along throughout the contest.
The third set saw multiple lead changes as the two traded blows. Gouws went up 6-5 and went on to end the match there. Gouws final score was 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
In the second round, Gouws was matched up with George Mason's Niza Simunyola. Gouws secured the first set 6-1, but Simunyola fought back to take the second set 6-4. Guows stepped on the gas and surged through the third set to win 6-0. The final score was Gouws, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.
