
Longwe-Smit Awarded CUSA Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Month

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty's Thando Longwe-Smit was awarded with the first Conference USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Month recognition, the conference announced Tuesday. Longwe-Smit enjoyed a 6-0 run at the Penn Invitational, dominating both his singles and doubles flights with 3-0 records.
The Cape Town, South Africa native got off to a torrid start to the 2023 with his perfect run at the Penn Invitational. Longwe-Smit picked three consecutive 2-0 days, the only Flame to accomplish the feat. At the event, Liberty was matched up Navy, Yale and Temple, playing a different opponent each day.
At the Penn Invitational, Longwe-Smit was paired with Rafael Marques Da Silva for doubles. The two played the last seven matches of the 2023 spring season together. The two used their experience together to propel them to a 3-0 record, going up against their opponents' No. 1 doubles pair.
Longwe-Smit prepares to participate in both singles and doubles at the ITA Men's Atlantic Regional beginning Wednesday. The six-day event is being hosted by Liberty. Longwe-Smit will continue to play with partner Marques Da Silva.
