Football Game Notes vs. Southern Miss
Press Conference: Head Coach Hugh Freeze
Following Liberty Head Football Coach Hugh Freeze on Monday, the local media spoke with senior safety Javon Scruggs and senior wide receiver Caleb Snead.
During the media availability session, Scruggs and Snead spoke about Liberty’s August Training Camp and previewed the Flames’ season-opening match-up against Southern Miss.
Scruggs is one of Liberty’s senior veterans, having played in 47 career games over the last four years and starting 34 contests. The Phil Steele Preseason All-Independent first-team selection is Liberty’s active career tackles leader with 187 career stops, five interceptions and five forced fumbles.
Snead is entering his first season at Liberty after earning FCS All-America honors at Campbell. He finished his three years at Campbell with 2,431 career receiving yards on 147 receptions and 25 touchdowns. He had a breakout year in 2021, leading the team with 1,067 receiving yards on 73 receptions with 10 touchdowns.
Flames Milestone Watch
5: S Javon Scruggs enters the season just five tackles shy of 200 for his career. He would become the first Flame to record 200 or more career stops since 2019, when former teammate and fellow safety Elijah Benton reached the milestone.
50: LS Austin Mock is set to make his 50th career start on Saturday. He has started every game since making his Flames debut during the 2018 season opener versus Old Dominion at Williams Stadium (Sept. 1, 2018).
69: WR Caleb Snead enters his Liberty debut needing 69 receiving yards to reach the 2,500-yard milestone for his collegiate career. A Lynchburg native, Snead began his career with three standout seasons at Campbell, totaling 147 receptions for 2,431 yards and 25 TDs.
