For the second season in a row, Liberty’s Demario Douglas has been recognized as one of the most versatile players in college football.
Douglas is one of 52 players who have been named to the 2022 Paul Hornung Award Watch list. The redshirt sophomore was also named to the watch list last year.
Now in its 13th season, the Paul Hornung Award is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission in the memory of the late football legend and Louisville native Paul Hornung.
The winner and his family will be honored at the annual Paul Hornung Award dinner at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville in March 2023.
Players on the 2022 Watch List represent 52 teams from all 10 football conferences and three independents that are part of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision.
Douglas finished the 2021 season as Liberty’s leading receiver with 52 receptions for 701 yards and six touchdowns. The rising redshirt sophomore also ranked No. 5 in the country, last season, in punt returns for a touchdown (1) and No. 33 in average punt return yards (6.8).
Earlier this summer, the native of Jacksonville, Fla., was named to the 2022 Phil Steele Preseason All-Independent first team as a wide receiver and the second team as a return specialist.
Douglas helped Liberty finish the 2021 season with an 8-5 record. The Flames ended the year by defeating Eastern Michigan in the LendingTree Bowl in Mobile, Ala., marking Liberty’s third-straight bowl game win.
Liberty is just one of five FBS teams in the country who have won a bowl game each of the last three seasons, joining Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky and Louisiana.
The Flames finished the 2021 season ranked No. 8 in the country in passing yards per completion (14.69), No. 25 in scoring offense (33.6 points per game) and No. 35 in first down offense (297) and total offense (436.2 yards per game).
