Liberty Flames men’s tennis player Josh Wilson has been selected as the ASUN Men’s Tennis Player of the Week.
Wilson’s honor is his sixth career ASUN Player of the Week accolade, Liberty’s first this season and Wilson’s first since Feb. 3, 2021.
“It’s super rewarding to see a guy like Josh starting to flourish. He is a guy who leads this team in so many ways on and off the court and who brings it every day to practice,” said Flames assistant coach Trevor Foshey. “He’s starting to really dial it in and find that extra gear where he can become one of the best in the country.”
Wilson won both of his singles matches last week on the road at No. 49 Charlotte and Georgia State. Last Friday against the 49ers, Wilson topped Mikhail Sokolovskiy 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match. On Sunday against GSU, Wilson led the Panthers’ Vazha Shubladze 5-2 in the first set on court two before Shubladze was forced to retire. Wilson’s victory provided Liberty a 2-0 lead in an eventual 4-3 road win over the Panthers.
Wilson’s second singles triumph of the weekend bolstered his spring singles mark to 5-3 (all in No. 2 slot) and gave him 20 wins on the season between spring and fall play (20-8 record). He now has a pair of 20-win seasons in singles during his Flames career.
Wilson’s honor is the 20th-all time ASUN Player of the Week award for the Flames since joining the conference prior to the start of the 2018-19 school year.
Wilson and No. 72 Liberty (4-6) are back in action on March 18 for their ASUN opener at Kennesaw State (6-3).
