The Liberty Flames men’s tennis squad will host the Old Dominion Monarchs in a Sunday afternoon match at the Liberty Tennis Complex. First serve is noon.
This will be the Flames’ first home outdoor match of the season. Liberty brings a 2-4 mark into the contest following a narrow 4-3 setback at Penn State, last Friday. ODU is 4-3 on the season and has won two straight, including a 4-1 win at William & Mary on Wednesday.
This is Liberty’s second home match of the season. The Flames have won 15 straight home matches dating back to the 2020 season. Liberty won its final two home matches of 2020, all 12 home matches in 2021 and is 1-0 at home this year.
Flames News and Notes
• The Flames and Monarchs split a pair of matches during the 2021 season. Liberty topped ODU 4-3 at home and fell 6-1 to the Monarchs on the road. ODU holds the all-time series edge, 11-1.
• Liberty and ODU competed against each other in an event this past fall, the Liberty Fall Hidden Dual, Nov. 5-7 at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center. The Flames claimed five of the seven singles matches, while the Monarchs won all three doubles contests.
• Liberty’s lone home match so far this season was against William & Mary on Jan. 26. The Flames swept the Tribe 7-0.
• Old Dominion boasts the lone ranked player in No. 40 Francois Le Tallec. Liberty senior Nicaise Muamba, a two-time ASUN Player of the Year, has been nationally ranked 14 times during his career.
• Current Flames Nicaise Muamba (66-36 career record) and Josh Wilson (63-34 career record) are approaching Chase Burton’s program record of 77 career singles wins. Wilson paces Liberty with 17 total singles victories (17-7 record) during the 2021-22 campaign.
• Liberty is still in search of its first ASUN Player of the Week honor, this season. The Flames captured nine of the 13 total available ASUN Player of the Week awards in 2021.
