Nguyen, Ode Mitre and Janikian Win One Round of Qualifying, Thursday

Liberty’s Tiffany Nguyen, Micaela Ode Mitre and Priscila Janikian each won one round of qualifying singles on the opening day of the ITA Atlantic Regional, Thursday at Virginia Tech’s Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
The three Liberty competitors were each victorious in straight sets on day one. However, all three Lady Flames fell in their second round matches later in the day. Liberty finishes day one with a 3-3 mark in singles. No doubles matches were contested today.
Key Stats & Notes
• Playing a 9 a.m. match against Anna Kirk of Saint Joseph’s, Liberty’s Ode Mitre prevailed 6-4, 6-1 to bolster her fall record to 5-0.
• Ode Mitre saw her unbeaten fall season come to an end in the afternoon as she dropped a two-set match (6-3, 6-3) to Maryland’s Francesca Feodorov, the No. 4 seed in pre-qualifying.
• Nguyen was the first Lady Flame in action this morning, as she faced VCU’s Anja Draskovic in an 8 a.m. contest. After battling past the Rams sophomore in an opening set tiebreaker (7-6 (4)), the Liberty junior claimed the second set 6-2 for a 7-6 (4), 6-2 triumph. Nguyen’s win was her third of the fall campaign.
• Nguyen met Maryland sophomore Kallista Liu in the next round. Liu, seeded 10th in pre-qualifying, came out on top 6-3, 7-5.
• Janikian was the last Liberty player to begin competing on day one with her first match schedule for noon against Longwood’s Emma Nurgazieva. After cruising to a 6-0 set one win, Janikian claimed a hard-fought second set by a 7-5 count to take the match, 6-0, 7-5.
• The Liberty sophomore advanced to face VCU’s Yelizaveta Karlova, the No. 2 seed in qualifying. Karlova took the match in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).
