Saturday's Top Storylines
- Coming off its first loss of 2021, Liberty (3-1) remains on the road Saturday evening for its first-ever meeting with UAB (3-1, 1-0 C-USA) and the first-ever contest to be played at Protective Stadium.
- Liberty is facing its second of four Conference USA opponents this season. The Flames have won four straight matchups with C-USA foes and are 5-1 all-time versus members of the league.
- The Flames will look to win a game in Alabama for the second time in four weeks, following a 21-13 triumph at Troy on Sept. 11. Prior to this season, Liberty was 0-6 all-time in Alabama.
- In his third season as Liberty's head coach, Hugh Freeze has posted a 21-7 record. After beginning his tenure with the Flames at 6-5, Freeze has coached Liberty to a 15-2 mark over the last 17 games.
- Liberty QB Malik Willis appears on numerous preseason watch lists including the Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. He has totaled 1,092 yards of offense (818 passing/274 rushing) and 14 TDs (10 passing/4 rushing) during the season's first four games.
- The Flames' defense ranks No. 8 nationally for yards allowed (251.8 ypg) and No. 15 nationally for points allowed (15.2 ppg). Kendy Charles sits No. 12 in the nation with 4.5 of Liberty's 11 sacks this season.
A Liberty Win Would ...
- Extend the Flames' winning streak against Conference USA opponents to five games and boost Liberty's all-time record versus C-USA foes to 6-1.
- Mark the Flames' second victory in Alabama in four weeks after Liberty had gone its first 48 football seasons without winning a single game in the state.
- Enable the Flames to avoid suffering their first back-to-back losses since Nov. 9 and 23, 2019 (at BYU and at Virginia).
- Improve the Flames' record when coming off a loss under Hugh Freeze to 5-2.
- Be the Flames' fifth consecutive victory in the month of October, running the team's October record to 7-1 under Hugh Freeze.
- Represent the Flames' fourth straight triumph when playing on Oct. 2, continuing a streak which began in 1999.
