Liberty's Warren Barrett and Kyle Mitchell will compete in the men's shot put at the Jamaica Track & Field Olympic Trials, Sunday morning at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. The event is set to begin at 9:40 a.m. Eastern.
In order to qualify for the Olympics, Barrett and Mitchell would need to hit the qualifying standard of 69-2.75 on Sunday, which would represent a massive personal best for either of them.
Mitchell will be competing for the first time since earning second team All-America honors with a 14th-place shot put finish at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, June 9 in Eugene, Ore. His ASUN-winning mark of 64-9.75 is Mitchell's lifetime best and the Liberty program record. Mitchell has captured a total of three ASUN men's shot put titles (2019 outdoor, 2020 indoor and 2021 outdoor).
Barrett's best mark during his first year as a Flame was 60-6.5 at the Texas Relays. The top effort of his career to date is 61-2. Barrett placed third in the men's shot put at both the ASUN Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Both Mitchell and Barrett have experienced success at previous Jamaican Championships. Mitchell placed third in the shot put in 2019, while Barrett took fourth place in 2018.
O'Dayne Richards is the top seed among the 10 entrants in Sunday's competition. He placed eighth in the men's shot put final at the 2016 Rio Olympics and owns the national record of 72-0.75.
Mitchell and Barrett will also square off against future ASUN Conference foe Courtney Lawrence. The Kennesaw State signee won the NJCAA national title in May with a personal-best 62-3.25 effort.
