Saturday's Top Storylines
1. Ranked No. 22 in both FBS national polls, undefeated Liberty (7-0) returns home on Saturday to face a Western Carolina squad making its 2020 season debut.
2. Coming off a dramatic 38-35 victory at Virginia Tech, the Flames are 7-0 to start a season for the first time in program history. They have won nine straight games overall (second-longest active streak in FBS) and nine consecutive home contests at Williams Stadium.
3. The Flames are 3-3 all-time against Western Carolina. However, the two teams have not faced off since 2008.
4. Liberty QB Malik Willis has been outstanding during his first six games as a Flame, averaging 100.5 rushing yards/game with seven rushing TDs and completing 67 percent of his passes for 1,339 yards and 12 scores. He has accounted for 11 TDs (nine passing, two rushing) in the last two games.
5. Willis is one of four Flames with a 100-yard rushing game this season, as Liberty ranks No. 12 nationally with 254.6 rushing yards per game. The Flames are 11-0 under Hugh Freeze when outrushing their opponent, including 6-0 this season.
6. The Liberty defense ranks among the nation's leaders in total yards allowed (No. 17, 311.7 yards/game). Last week, the Flames limited the nation's No. 4-ranked rushing offense (Virginia Tech) to a season-low 201 yards on the ground.
A Liberty Win Would ...
• Mark the Flames' third straight win in the head-to-head series with Western Carolina, giving Liberty a 4-3 edge in the all-time series.
• Extend the Flames' best-ever start to a season to 8-0. It would give Liberty its 12th 8-win season in program history and second in a row.
• Represent the Flames' 10th consecutive win overall, dating back to last season. It would extend Liberty's longest winning streak of the FBS era and be its longest since a program-record 11-game winning streak spanning Oct. 20, 2007-Oct. 11, 2008. If Notre Dame loses to Boston College Saturday, Liberty would own the nation's longest active winning streak among FBS teams.
• Extend the Flames' home winning streak at Williams Stadium to 10 games, their longest since a 10-game home winning streak spanning the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons.
• Keep the Flames' record versus FCS foes unbeaten (6-0) since joining the FBS ranks in 2018.
