Saturday's Top Storylines
1. Unbeaten Liberty (5-0) will welcome Southern Miss (1-3, 1-1 C-USA) to Williams Stadium for the first time on Saturday, aiming for its third win over a Conference USA foe this season.
2. Receiving votes in both Top 25 polls, Liberty will attempt to match the 1989 and 2008 squads for the best start in program history at 6-0. The Flames have won seven straight games overall and eight straight home contests at Williams Stadium.
3. The Flames and Golden Eagles will square off for the first time. Saturday will also mark the first time Liberty Head Coach Hugh Freeze has faced his alma mater during his head coaching career. Freeze is a 1992 graduate of Southern Miss.
4. Liberty QB Malik Willis has been outstanding during his first four games as a Flame, averaging 99.5 rushing yards/game (tops among FBS QBs) with five rushing TDs and completing 64 percent of his passes for 777 yards and three scores.
5. Willis is one of four Flames with a 100-yard rushing game this season, as Liberty ranks No. 6 nationally with 268.2 rushing yards per game. Shedro Louis (career-high 170 yards) and Peytton Pickett (115 yards) both exceeded the century mark during the Flames' first-ever ACC win at Syracuse, last week.
6. The Liberty defense ranks among the nation's leaders in total yards allowed (No. 4, 269.6 yards/game) and points allowed (No. 10, 18.6 points/game). The Flames have recorded seven takeaways in the last three games, leading to 38 points.
A Liberty Win Would ...
• Match the Flames' best start to a season in program history. The 1989 and 2008 squads also started out 6-0.
• Make the Flames one of the nation's first 6-0 FBS teams. Clemson goes for 6-0 Saturday at noon vs. Syracuse.
• Give the Flames a 3-0 record versus Conference USA foes this season, making Liberty the first team with three C-USA victories in 2020.
• Represent the Flames' eighth consecutive win overall, dating back to last season. It would extend Liberty's longest winning streak of the FBS era and be its longest since a program-record 11-game winning streak spanning Oct. 20, 2007-Oct. 11, 2008.
• Extend the Flames' home winning streak at Williams Stadium to nine games, their longest since a 10-game home winning streak spanning the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons.
• Mark the 15th consecutive season Liberty has won six or more games.
