Following another strong week of tennis last week, Liberty junior Eddie Gutierrez has been named the Big South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Wednesday morning.
The player of the week recognition is the first of Gutierrez's Liberty career. He was named Big South Freshman of the Week on two occasions in 2016. Gutierrez is the first Flame since Sam Matheson (March 9, 2016) to receive Big South Player of the Week honors.
The Mexico City, Mexico, native posted two singles wins and one doubles triumph, last week against UNCW (road), USC Upstate (neutral) and Virginia (road).
He won a three-setter last Friday against UNCW's Agustin Savarino (6-2, 5-7, 6-3) in the No. 3 position. On Saturday, his 6-0, 6-2 defeat of the USC Upstate Spartans' Ankush Arora on court three helped Liberty to a 4-0 victory, its third of the year. Gutierrez paces the Flames with 14 singles victories during the 2017-18 season.
Gutierrez and doubles partner Vince Salas continued their winning ways on Sunday, prevailing in their No. 2 doubles match against the defending national champs, the Virginia Cavaliers, to improve to 6-0 as a unit, this spring.
Gutierrez and the Flames (3-5) will have some time off from their competition schedule before returning to the courts on Feb. 23 for a match against New Orleans in Tallahassee, Fla. The following day (Feb. 24), Liberty will take on Florida A&M and Florida State.
