Liberty junior Maria Medina collected two victories, highlighting day one of competition at the Wake Forest Invitational on Friday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
On Friday morning, Medina and freshman Grace Hashiguchi teamed up to earn an 8-4 victory against Richmond's Dessislava Zlateva and Emily Dunbar in the first round of the B doubles flight.
Medina earned an impressive singles triumph, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), over Louisville's Abbie Pahz in the A2 singles bracket. After comfortably winning the first set, Medina overcame a 5-1 second-set deficit to top Pahz, winning five of the next six games to force a tiebreaker. Medina prevailed in the tiebreaker, 8-6.
With the win, Medina improves to 4-0 in singles, this fall, and will face Kansas State's Rosanna Maffei on Saturday in a semifinal matchup.
Freshman Nasha Ghajar defeated Marshall's Ana Marhuenda, 6-4, 6-2, avenging a loss from three weeks prior at the South Carolina Invitational. Ghajar is set to take on UNC Asheville's Anastasia Horvat in tomorrow's semifinals of the H1 singles bracket.
Medina, Hashiguchi and Ghajar are the only Lady Flames to participate in this weekend's Wake Forest Invite among Liberty's 12-player roster.
Day two of competition resumes at 9 a.m., Saturday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. Results from day two, as well as a recap, will be available on LibertyFlames.com following completion of play.
