Following Liberty's first practice of its August Training Camp on Monday, LFSN reporter Nick Pierce had a chance to talk with Liberty senior defensive lineman JaRon Greene.
Greene is one of several players looking to step up on the defensive line following the graduation of defensive end Chima Uzowihe, the 2015 Big South Defensive Player of the Year. Uzowihe finished the 2015 season with 52 tackles (34 solo, 18 assisted), including 17.0 tackles for a loss (86 yards) and 8.0 sacks (62 yards). He also led the Big South and ranked No. 17 in the country in tackles for a loss (1.5 per game).
Greene has started 25 career games with most of his career starts coming at nose guard. The senior ranked seventh on Liberty's roster in 2015 with 36 tackles (16 solo, 20 assisted), including 4.5 tackles for a loss and 2.0 sacks.
The native of Beaumont, Texas, posted a season-best eight tackles during Liberty's 45-35 home victory over Kennesaw State in 2015. He also finished with five stops against Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb and helped Liberty upend No. 7 Montana with three solo tackles.
The senior enters his final season having recorded 77 career tackles (31 solo, 46 assisted) in 36 career games played. He has also recorded 15.0 career tackles for a loss, 5.5 career sacks and a forced fumble.
On the practice field today, Liberty completed its NCAA mandatory acclimation period with a morning workout in half pads. The Flames will don full pads for the first time tomorrow morning for Liberty's fifth practice of August.
