After recording the most conference wins in a single season in program history with eight, the Liberty Lady Flames tennis squad has earned the program's first-ever No. 1 seed for the upcoming 2016 Big South Women's Tennis Championship. Liberty shared the regular season Big South title for the first time since 2011 and the second time in program history.
The Lady Flames (13-9, 8-1 Big South) will await the winner of the No. 8 seeded Longwood (9-12, 2-7, Big South) vs. No. 9 seeded Radford (1-14, 1-8 Big South) in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 9 a.m. Liberty successfully defeated both Longwood and Radford by the final score of 6-1 in each match this season. Both contests were played on the road for the Lady Flames.
Winthrop, which shared the regular-season championship with Liberty at 8-1, garners the No. 2 seed as the Eagles fell in their head-to-head match against the Lady Flames, 4-3, on March 19 in Lynchburg, Va. Coastal Carolina and defending champion Charleston Southern tied for third in the Big South standings at 7-2. The Chanticleers receive the No. 3 seed based upon their 6-1 win over the Buccaneers on March 30.
Campbell lands the No. 5 seed following its 5-4 conference season, with UNC Asheville earning the No. 6 seed after finishing 4-5 in the league this year. Gardner-Webb receives the No. 7 seed with its 3-6 Big South record, while Longwood captures the No. 8 seed at 2-7. Radford (No. 9 at 1-8) and Presbyterian College (No. 10 at 0-9) round out the seeding.
The 2016 Big South Women's Tennis Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting begins Friday, April 15 with two first round matches and concludes with the Championship match on Monday, April 18.
